Welcome to the great outdoors!
The best way to experience the full thrill of Yorkshire’s countryside and coast is to get outside and see it for yourself....you’ll probably start the day by spreading the map across the breakfast table and planning where to go first! The hotel or B&B won’t mind - they’ll probably have some good suggestions and offer that special advice that only the locals have. Yorkshire people have a great pride in their famous countryside and will be glad to help you plan your routes.
You’ll soon be sauntering around a bluebell wood or rambling across a breath-taking seaside clifftop, before marching along a moorland trail or pottering around a pretty village. With three world-famous National Parks - the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales and Peak District - Yorkshire has more than 1,000 square miles of National Park to explore. And there are more wonderful areas to discover, like the Yorkshire Pennines, Yorkshire Wolds and more than 130 miles of Yorkshire Coastline, boasting awe-inspiring views, flocks of interesting seabirds and miles of heritage and adventure, stretching into the horizon.
It’s easy to walk, ride or drive around inspiring scenery, or you could just wander down some of the hundreds of quiet country lanes, canal towpaths and long empty beaches.
Yorkshire’s great outdoors is one of the wonders of Britain – all year round, there are opportunities to be as wild or as mild as you like. Wherever you stay, the great Yorkshire outdoors is never far away. Save a day to hunt for fossils on a beach or catch a trout for tea, tackle a long-distance walk or cycle one of the dedicated bike routes. Unwind, breathe the clean fresh air and do as little or as much as you like.
And you’ll find memorable experiences over every hill. It may be a view you’ll never forget or simply the fun you have crossing the river on ancient stepping stones at The Bolton Abbey Estate near Harrogate. High in the hills of the Dales you can stroll across unique natural limestone pavements, while on the craggy shore at Bempton Cliffs there is almost a quarter of a million seabirds to spot.
There’s so much to see and do, you’ll need plenty of breaks! Why not stock up with wonderful local produce at the village store or at a local farmers’ market? You’ll find all the ingredients for a perfect picnic - fresh eggs, various fruit and vegetables and breads, plus those special Yorkshire nik-naks. Find a hill or clifftop and enjoy... after all, there aren’t many restaurants in the world with views as good as these!
