Founded by the Normans in 1071, Richmond in Swaledale centres on a vast cobbled market place - reputedly the largest in England! Medieval buildings jostle with elegant Georgian facades and a free guided tour of the town offers an insight into its history as well as unrivalled views of the steep wooded valley of the River Swale and the surrounding Yorkshire Dales countryside.
Richmond is home to the oldest and most complete working award winning Georgian theatre in England. There are three museums offering an opportunity to discover the town’s intriguing past.
The town has some spectacular riverside walks and historic town trails, and an impressive castle keep. It boasts a variety of shops, delicious tearooms and unusual galleries, including that of the artist Mackenzie Thorpe, now world famous for his images of square sheep.
There is an indoor market open everyday and an open-air market on Saturdays and a farmers market the third Saturday of every month. Richmond also has an all year round events calendar, including the Richmond Meet (May), Richmond Live (August) and the walking festival (September).
