Saltaire

Salts Mill, Saltaire, Shipley near Bradford

Saltaire is one of the Bradford district’s most famous villages.  Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, this model Victorian village is a delight to visit.  Sir Titus Salt built the village in the 19th century for the spiritual, physical and moral welfare of his workers and today his great mill complex is the key feature of Saltaire.

This imposing mill now houses the 1853 Gallery, an impressive collection of art by the famous Bradford-born artist David Hockney.  It’s also home to some fantastic shops and restaurants, including the popular Salts Diner

More striking architecture can be found at Saltaire United Reformed Church.  Built by Sir Titus Salt in 1859 the church is a unique example of Italianate religious architecture. It boasts many architecturally and historically important features and has been described as a classic Cathedral of Congregationalism

Nearby is the tow path to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, which is wonderful for a stroll or cycle.  Look out for the Five Rise Locks, an 18th century masterpiece built so that barges on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal could progress through the hilly landscape.
