Kirkbymoorside

Kirkbymoorside

Known locally as ‘Kirby’, the town name literally means church-by-the-moor-side.

Fine Georgian houses and welcoming hostelries edge the broad cobble-lined main street. Market traders sell a range of goods every Wednesday. It was on his stay in Kirkbymoorside in 1687, that the notorious courtier George Villiers, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, died in shame after a life of drunkenness, violence and general misbehaviour!

A walk up Vivers Hill, originally the site of one of Kirkbymoorsides' two castles, offers a wonderful view over the town and of the Vale of Pickering. The town has an excellent brass band, which has won many accolades, and regularly plays at events in the area. A nearby attraction is the Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le-Hole, a collection of rescued and restored historic buildings, which display the rich cultural history of Ryedale.
