The Three Peaks Race takes place 26th April and traverses the famous Yorkshire Dales mountains of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside, has a great reputation as one of the oldest, most famous and best organised fell races in Britain. The Three Peaks Race first ran in 1954, and covers 24 miles of the most rugged and spectacular countryside in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Competitors are taken to a height of 2,500 feet above sea level and venture into the rugged heartland of the Dales.
For 2008, the annual Three Peaks Race, based at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, will be run as the World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge.
The Council of The World Mountain Running Association chose the well established race in the Yorkshire Dales in the face of stiff competition from other high profile European destinations. The 2006 race was held in Colorado, U.S.A. and the 2007 event was the Jungfrau race in Grindelwald, Switzerland.
Up to 100 overseas competitors are expected, including selected international elite long distance mountain runners for whom the organisers must provide free accommodation and generous subsidised travel.
Three Peaks Race is on 26th April 2008.
