
One of England’s highest market towns, Hawes lies 259 metres (850 feet) above sea level and is locally known as the capital of Upper Wensleydale. The town lies within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Pennine Way passes through therefore making it an ideal stop over for long distance walkers.
Set amongst spectacular scenery Hawes is a traditional market town with narrow winding cobbled streets. These lead to the market square which hosts an array of shops, galleries and tearooms. Although Hawes is a small market town there is still sufficient to keep visitors of all ages entertained.
Not only is Hawes renowned for its beautiful scenery and dramatic landscape but it is home to some of the best British cheese. Whilst in Hawes a visit to the creamery is a must. The visitor centre is open for all to watch how this world class cheese is made.
Hawes is also home to the traditional craft of ropemaking. The ropemakers have been producing ropes in Hawes since 1905 and visitors can view the process of producing a wide range of ropes, braids cords which are sold to markets all over the world.
