Danby

This bustling village is a great place to start your visit to the North York Moors National Park.

The Moors National Park Centre provides a perfect introduction to the people, wildlife and history of the National Park. There is plenty at the Centre to entertain all ages including play areas, interactive exhibitions, nature and riverside trails, stunning audio visuals and a beautiful exhibition space for visiting arts and crafts people. Maps and books of the local area can be purchased in the Centre’s shop along with souvenirs and handmade crafts and there is also a café serving delicious local food and drink. Events and exhibitions for the whole family are on offer and friendly staff can advise you about the best things to see and do whilst you are here.

The village has an excellent bakery and there are lots of other historic features to explore. Duck Bridge is a medieval packhorse bridge over the River Esk built in 1396. The nearby village of Ainthorpe also boats the oldest pub in the area – the Fox and Hounds was built in 1555.

If you are looking for a walk, Danby Beacon is a superb viewpoint – it’s 299 metres high! An excellent guide to five short circular walks – Walks from The Moors Centre has also been published by the National Park Authority.

Botton Village high up in Danby Dale is also well worth a detour. The village is run by the Camphill Village Trust and is a charitable community where mentally handicapped adults live with non-handicapped people as a family. They develop their full potential working in the workshops and farm. You are welcome to visit the village and see the doll shop, weaving shop, woodwork shop, glass engraving and food processing. You can also enjoy the bakery, creamery, coffee shop, bookshop and gift shop.
