Sea Kayaking

Sea Kayaking

Flamborough Head provides some of the most
spectacular canoeing on the north-east coast

The section of coast line around Flamborough Head provides some of the most spectacular canoeing on the north-east coast, with vertical chalk cliffs eroded to form natural arches and sea caves.  The best time to paddle this coast is at high water as you can get in close to the cliffs as long as there is no swell.  There are some amazing sea caves, some of which are so deep that a torch is required to fully explore them.

Bempton CliffsThe chalk cliffs form part of the RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs and provide an amazing wildlife spectacle with fantastic landscapes.  Bempton is home to England’s largest seabird colony during the spring and summer breeding season, with an incredible 200,000 seabirds.

Sea kayaking is a great way of keeping fit and seeing the land from a different angle. Historically one of the earliest forms of paddling, this activity has become popular and can be varied by sampling lake, river or even sea.

Sea Kayaking is a good way of being active whilst protecting the environment and appeals to all ages who enjoy being in the great outdoors and love the feeling of being at one with nature. The sea has a temperament and character which needs to be understood, so should only be tackled by experienced paddlers.

A new development in recent years has been the introduction of sea racing: standard expedition kayaks are raced over a distances of up to 12 miles. All the races are friendly and informal and have touring classes. Sea kayaking for many however, is a quiet individual experience to be enjoyed quietly, away from the crowds. Symposiums are great social events as well as being informative and practical.
