Pontefract has something for everyone, from shopping to ski-ing, liquorice to chocolate and castles to carnivals.
Pontefract’s annual Liquorice Festival is a celebration of the town’s long-standing association with the growing and manufacture of liquorice confectionary. The earliest record linking Pontefract and liquorice was in 1695 when it would have been used for medicinal purposes.
Liquorice is no longer grown commercially in Pontefract but the famous Pontefract Cakes are still produced in the town and can be purchased direct from the two factory shops.
Pontefract is also well known in horse racing circles for having the longest flat, circular course in Europe.
