Hebden Bridge

Hardcastle Crags, Hebden Bridge

Well known for its creative output and bohemian atmosphere, the streets and squares of Hebden Bridge are lined with independent, individual shops, galleries, cafes, bars and restaurants.

The free-thinking, creative spirit which epitomises this area, finds full expression in the town’s many studios, workshops and galleries, where artists and designers can frequently be seen at work. The town’s passion for the arts is reflected in annual events that include both an Arts and a Music Festival.

For lazy days, chill out a leisurely narrowboat cruise on the Rochdale canal or, for inspiration and education, take a towpath walk to the Alternative Technology Centre.

In the hills above the town, Heptonstall has remained unspoilt by passing centuries and retains the characteristics of a medieval hilltop settlement.

A short distance away is the National Trust’s Hardcastle Crags. Walks, nature trails and stepping stones are just some of the delights of this wooded valley, along with Gibson Mill – a unique mill that generates all its own electricity.

A walk along the canal towpath from Hebden Bridge brings you to Mytholmroyd, birthplace of Ted Hughes. And at Walkley Clogs, you can see clogs being made by master clog-makers.
