Herriot Country is a beautiful area of pastoral countryside, peacefully sandwiched between two world-famous National Parks - North York Moors and The Yorkshire Dales. It’s an area of grand sweeping hills, rich valleys, charming market towns and pretty villages nestling in the Vale of Mowbray and under the Hambleton Hills.
The unspoilt landscape is perfect for cycling or walking - either a gentle stroll to the nearest pub or a memorable adventure on one of many waymarked trails. Take a stroll on the White Horse Walk, for example, with spectacular views of Gormire Lake, Whitestone Cliff and the White Horse of Kilburn. This landmark was carved into the hill by 30 men in 1857 - it celebrates its 150th birthday this year. Or explore the Cleveland Way, passing some of Britain's most memorable scenery, like Sutton Bank and Roseberry Topping.
All that revitalising fresh air is sure to make you hungry, and you'll find award-winning restaurants, cosy pubs, stylish cafes and charming tearooms everywhere.
Of course, the area takes its name from one of the world's best-loved vets, James Herriot. His practice was based in Thirsk for more than 50 years. Learn more about the real James Herriot and the famous TV series 'All Creatures Great and Small' at The World of James Herriot Museum in Thirsk.
There’s a great tradition of handicrafts in this area too. The Furniture Trail is a leisurely way to explore eleven fine woodworking workshops in and around Thirsk. Continue on the trail of craftsmen at Kilburn to learn about world-famous furniture-maker Robert Thompson at the Mouseman Visitor Centre and Gallery.
The grand old market towns of Thirsk, Northallerton, Bedale, Easingwold, Stokesley and Great Ayton, have a selection of restaurants, pubs and places to stay - plus a wide range of attractions and free parking. They're perfect for exploring lovely old-fashioned shops, including hand-made craft stores and high quality local food producers.
