The British Long board Surfing Championships is due to be held on Scarborough's South Bay on September 21st.
There will be approximately 8 longboard surf clubs entering this year's competition, all of which have to be affiliated with the BSA British Surfing Association. The BSA also provide a good package on Third Party Insurance which every surfer should have before taking part in any competition.
Each Longboard Club will put in A,B and in some instances C teams of 6 surfers all of whom are seeded. The amount of entries is dependent on whether there are any clashes with International events held by major surf companies which each sponsored surfer is obliged to enter for his points tally over the year. Some of these may be abroad which makes the A teams vulnerable if their top surfers are competing elsewhere. But this is the same for every club.
The majority of the surf clubs will be from Devon, Cornwall and Sussex some of their members will be from Jersey and The Isle of Wight.
The Royal Navy Royal Marine Team are based in Devon and there entry will be based on who is not on Tour of Duty at the time, they have already submitted their team, the forces encourage this activity, mind, body and soul.
Longboard or Malibu surfing is ideally suited to the waves we have in the region, the Malibu board 9’-0” to 10’-0” and over gives you a better chance of taking off on the wave long before the wave breaks giving a longer time on the wave before the whitewater/surf breaks and spoils the wave.
The boards are known as Malibu as this is where the Longboard as we know it today was first produced on a major scale, after the pioneer surfers went to after their experiences in Hawaii. Surfing was the first sport of Kings and Royalty as the Royal Family were the only ones allowed to ride the Olu Board which was in the region of 12’-0” long.
The art of Longboard Surfing progresses and changes as does all sports and can sometimes be judged on style alone or on progressive power moves, the majority of competitions are judged with both styles scoring points.
The Championships is a great coup for Scarborough because once again it puts the coast on the surfing map. The only surfers who do come up North for practice are the hardcore international surfers who like to surf the various point and slab breaks around the area, which are well known among the experienced surfers.
