The views across Denby Dale and Kirkburton are quite spectacular and, because the area is slightly flatter than normal Yorkshire countryside, it's great walking or cycling for all ages.
Denby Dale is a large village set in rolling Yorkshire countryside, famed as the 'Pie Village' after the huge pies made to celebrate special events. The tradition began with the baking of a pie to celebrate the recovery of George III from illness. The most recent, was a 12-tonne pie created to celebrate the Millennium.
The nearby villages of Shelly, Shepley and Emley offer attractive shops, restaurants and cafes. Experience mill shopping on a smaller scale at Springfield Mills or visit Armitages Pennine Garden Centre in Shelley, where you'll find a wide range of plants, flowers and unusual gifts. Take a break from browsing to enjoy home-cooked food at the centre's Café 1842 and for a real evening treat, wine and dine by the log fire at Thunderbridge's popular Woodman Inn.
In nearby Clayton West take a trip on the Kirklees Light Railway for a stunning journey across the Dearne Valley taking in views of Emley Moor TV mast and Blacker Wood, and travel through the longest tunnel of a narrow gauge railway in Britain.
