Celebrate Halloween in Yorkshire's spookier corners

East Riddersden HallAutumn is a time of lengthening shadows, and with Halloween just around the corner, many people's minds are turning towards ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night!

So what better time of year for exploring Yorkshire than now, with a range of spooky events all across the region?  From stories of bleeding walls at Clifford's Tower in York, to phantom choirs at Rievaulx Abbey, near Helmsley, the walls of Yorkshire's historic castles hold all kinds of secrets that some believe are revealed by the ghostly presences that still reside there...

Come face to face with animated ghosts and ghouls in the Haunted House at Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre, Sheffield. Take a Haunted Hayride round the Freaky Forest and play Trick or Treat on the Witch in the Wood. Carve a pumpkin, join in creepy crafts and enjoy witches brews and spooky snacks. Event dates 27th-31st October

The weekend of the 25th October is a time to venture to Haworth in Brontë Country and really get the whole family involved in some spooky goings on! With goblins & ghouls, witches & wizards, there's plenty to set the mind racing, whilst enjoying the pretty village and getting a taste for local culture. As the sun goes down on Sunday evening join the scary parade up Main Street - guaranteed to be lots of fun for the whole family. Venture then to nearby Harrogate - a great place just to relax and take it easy.  Watch the world go by in Montpellier Quarter, stroll around the town or stroll through the attractively landscaped Valley Gardens and up through the lush, green pine woods to the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Harlow Carr. Event dates 25th-26th October

East Riddlesden Hall is an imposing 17th century manor house with a stunning collection of embroideries, pewter and oak furniture - an ideal setting for some eerie activities! Visitors can wander around the house and absorb its lived-in feel. The Great Hall is an imposing introduction to the house and upstairs you can gaze across the Aire Valley through the rose windows that are linked to West Ridings manor houses. Enjoy a night of thrills and chills with the Hall's resident ghosts - Mistress Murgatroyd and the Housekeeper, as you are taken on a spine tingling walk around the grounds, with chilling tales of the property....but there is a fine reward at the end in the form of a three course seasonal supper! Why not also spend time in Bradford, enjoying this cosmopolitan city's fascinating museums, galleries and parks? Event date 25th October

The Blue Lady haunts Temple NewsamTemple Newsam near the vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Leeds is one of the most admired historic houses in the North of England. Famous as the birthplace of Lord Darnley, infamous husband of Mary Queen of Scots, Temple Newsam is a truly impressive country house and an ideal place to scare yourself this Halloween! The attraction's Halloween Hauntings event is an event for all the family to enjoy. Meet the ghosts and ghouls of Temple Newsam, explore spooky corridors and listen out for spectral footsteps! The cafe will be open for spooky treats. Event date 31st October.
