The wool industry is closely woven into the fabric of Halifax's fine heritage.
Built on the production of wool and worsted cloth, Halifax's attractions are a reminder of its heyday as prosperous textile centre.
Things to see when visiting Halifax
- The beautifully colonnaded Grade I listed Piece Hall opened in 1779 as a market place for 'pieces' of woollen and worsted cloth. Visit its trendy café bars, contemporary shops and galleries and enjoy markets and events in the huge square courtyard.
- The magnificent Grade II listed Town Hall, designed by Houses of Parliament architect, Charles Barry
- The Grade II listed Halifax Borough Market, voted Best Indoor Market 2008, and one of the finest Victorian buildings in Britain
- Dean Clough, once home to the world's largest carpet manufacturers, now a centre for theatre, music and contemporary art. Check out its nine galleries and funky design shop.
