Yorkshire loves its football, and is the undisputed birthplace of the modern club game! The area is home to some of the biggest names in the sport, and you'll find exciting action on offer every week as the county's major names make a bid to return to the Premier League.

With Leeds United and Hull City back in the Championship this season's football action should provide some high profile talking points as Yorkshire looks to return to the top flight.
 
Away from the Championship, Huddersfield under their ambitious young manager are mounting a serious challenge in League One, as are the famous old Sheffield clubs, of Wednesday and United.
In fact there is no shortage of great matches to choose from across the county on any weekend during the football season with Barnsley, Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers, Rotherham and Scunthorpe United also on show. Football fans will never be far from the action.
 
Yorkshire is passionate about its football and has been home to some of the game's defining sides and memorable matches. This season will be no different as the county's clubs battle it out for promotion, often against each other, which adds to the drama and the raises the stakes for players and fans alike.
 
The region's stadia combine the best of traditional and modern, and many have hosted some of the biggest occasions in the English game. Sheffield FC - recognised by FIFA and the FA as the world's first ever football club in 1857 - shows how long Yorkshire has been at the forefront of football and with Sheffield and Leeds a part of the official 2018 World Cup Bid, Yorkshire is set to be at the forefront of the modern game too.

Rugby League

Wakefield Rugby LeagueRugby league is Yorkshire born and bred and has developed into one of the most popular and passionate spectator and participation sports in Britain, since the classic northern breakaway from the Rugby Football Union in Huddersfield in 1895. Tough and physically demanding, League is woven into the cultural identity of many Yorkshire communities, but it's also an exciting sport that looks forward, not back, and it's popularity is growing season on season.

The sport enjoys fantastic TV coverage on both Sky and the BBC, where audiences have reached 25 million viewers. But everyone can enjoy it live here in Yorkshire.

No less than seven of the national engage Super League elite teams are Yorkshire clubs: Bradford Bulls, Castleford Tigers, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC, Hull KR, Wakefield Wildcats and Leeds Rhinos. Leeds and Bradford have been two of the most successful teams since Super League kicked off in 1996.

If you're an absolute beginner to the game the rules are easier to pick up than you would think and, once you have got to grips with the basics, working out exactly what's going on is all part of the fun. With 13 players a side, and up to 12 changes allowed per side, things move pretty fast! Home games generally kick off around 8pm on Friday or 3.30pm on Sundays, for a fast and furious start or finish to the weekend!

LeedsRugby Union in Yorkshire may not yet enjoy the fame of its League counterpart, but union's traditions of providing great entertainment and strong competition are long and proud. Leeds Carnegie, last season's National Division One Champions, trace their roots back to 1878; Doncaster Knights - the most promoted side in English rugby!- began life even earlier, in 1875; and just five years after World War 1, in 1923, Rotherham Titans joined the fray.

The 2009-10 season now sees Leeds Carnegie doing top-flight battle in The Guinness Premiership, facing up to the country's best teams, while the Titans and the Knights bid for the opportunity to do the same from The Championship (formerly National Division One) just one step down from the top tier of the English game.
