Advance Ticket sales soar in new look Ebor
Story Published: 17 August 2010
Advance ticket sales for the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival have set a new record - up 12% on last year's record figures.
The Festival which runs from today (Tuesday) to Friday, is titled sponsored for the first time in its 167 year history by Welcome to Yorkshire. The increase in ticket sales is why the racecourse signed a deal with the county's tourism agency - an attempt to widen awareness of the Festival.
Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "We have been high profile in our sponsorship of the Festival as can be seen by the banner hanging from the Ebor Stand. We want as many people as possible to come racing in Yorkshire, enjoy Yorkshire and all its hospitality and return to Yorkshire in the future, so record advance numbers is great news for everyone involved!"
It is hoped that the strong advance sales will result in a new attendance record for the four day format of the Festival.
Last year's Festival welcomed over 80,000 racegoers to the event and it already provides a significant boost for tourism and hospitality businesses across the county. An independent economic impact study conducted by York University valued the role of the racecourse at £44million a year.
Yorkshire will be seen worldwide this week as footage of the Festival will be broadcast internationally by BBC Worldwide. It will also be live on Channel Four to domestic audiences.
Speaking on behalf of the team at York, William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course, said: "We are delighted our partnership with Welcome to Yorkshire is already bearing fruit.
"The investment that we make in prize money and facilities for racegoers means that we can represent this wonderful county with pride and I look forward to a successful first ever Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival."
