Award-winning Chelsea Garden comes home to Yorkshire
Story published: 12 July 2010
The garden which took the Chelsea Flower Show by storm is returning to its Yorkshire roots.
The award winning 'Welcome to Yorkshire's Rhubarb Crumble and Custard Garden' is to be star of the show at this year's Great Yorkshire Show.
The garden, which was awarded the prestigious People's Choice Award 2010 and a Silver Medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2010, is a quirky take on the classic dish of 'rhubarb crumble and custard' inspired by Yorkshire's very own 'Rhubarb Triangle'. The garden is made even more celebratory as earlier this year Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb was awarded Protected Designation of Origin Status by the European Commission's Protected Food Name Scheme, the same as Parma ham and Champagne.
The garden uses traditional and natural materials and celebrates Yorkshire's produce, craftsmanship and its famous landscapes. A mouthwatering bowl of rhubarb sits centre stage with a traditional dry stone wall representing the crumble topping and yellow sedum plants depicting a good serving of custard flowing through the garden. The York stone patio features a handcrafted oak chair, shaped like a spoon, which has been created by Yorkshire Dales craftsman, Peter Cummings.
Gary Verity, chief executive of tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire, said; "It's great to see our garden back in Yorkshire. Every inch of it celebrates all that is great about Yorkshire and it's certainly something that we're very proud of. Winning the two awards at Chelsea this year completed an amazing debut at the legendary flower show and it was a great privilege to be showcasing Yorkshire's celebrated local produce, craftwork and landscape at the Chelsea Flower Show. Having the garden at the Great Yorkshire Show will give thousands more people the chance to see this fabulous garden."
After the Great Yorkshire Show, Welcome to Yorkshire's Rhubarb Crumble and Custard Garden will reside permanently at RHS Harlow Carr near Harrogate.
