Yorkshire brother and sister battle it out for top award

Published: 26 August 2011

A Yorkshire brother and sister are set to go head-to-head in a battle to be the best caravan park in the county.

Rebecca Palmer-Bunting and brother Nick Palmer will compete for the title of Best Caravan Holiday Park & Holiday Village in this year's prestigious White Rose Awards.

Rebecca, 33, is manager of the Robin Hood Caravan Park, Slingsby, York while Nick, 29, manages Jasmine Park in Snainton, Scarborough.

They are believed to be the first ever siblings to make the awards shortlist in over 20 years.

Nick said: "We are all looking forward to the award ceremony but I am sure there will be some sibling ribbing before that, fingers crossed that I win!! Either way, for us both to be nominated is something we can all be very proud of."

Both are hoping to claim the title for the first time ever, although Jasmine Park was nominated back in 2009. Both are English Tourism Council 5 Star rated Caravan Parks.

Rebecca added: "To have both been shortlisted for this award is a huge honour for the family. We all help out at each of the parks so even if Jasmine Park wins I know that I've done my bit to help."

Rebecca and husband Damian are also thrilled to have been shortlisted in the "Outstanding Customer Service" category.

Caravan Parks have been in the family for years after the sibling's grandparents set up Crow's Nest Caravan Park, near Filey, in the 1950s.

Now their dad Ian Palmer owns all three businesses and says he's proud of their nominations.

He said: "To have our efforts recognised by the industry as well as the guests is great. As a family, we have put a lot of hard work into all three sites and it is fantastic to be shortlisted for these awards."

Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "The White Rose Awards are the Oscars of the tourism industry and we have been flooded with entries. To have siblings shortlisted and competing in the finals is a tremendous feat for the family in itself. Good luck to all our finalists!"

Robin Hood Caravan and Camping Park and Jasmine Park will be up against Studfold Caravan and Camping Park, Lofthouse near Harrogate, and Faweather Grange, High Eldwick in West Yorkshire.

Anne Challis from Studfold Caravan and Camping Park said: "We are absolutely delighted and very proud to be shortlisted for this award. The Walker family have been custodians of this special part of Upper Nidderdale for 16 generations. The diversification that has happened on the farmland now gives visitors and families with young children a chance to stay in this beautiful Dale as well as helping them to understanding this amazing environment through a variety of fun activities; exploring and  discovering and having a true Yorkshire Welcome and Experience - 'The Nidderdale Experience!'"

Debbie Skinn at Faweather Grange adds: "The unique visitor experience of staying in a luxury real log cabin combined with a virtual concierge service which includes such treats as your personal chauffeur driven Bentley to a Michelin star restaurant is what makes Faweather Grange worthy of its 6th nomination as finalist in the White Rose Awards.  All who work so hard at Faweather are delighted and very proud of this achievement."

The annual White Rose Awards are Yorkshire's biggest and most spectacular tourism awards, intended to recognise and celebrate the best of the regions tourism industry.

This year's glittering ceremony, featuring live performers and a charity race, will take place at Doncaster Racecourse on Monday the 10th of October.
