Yorkshire tops national average for conference and event bookings

Published: 19 September, 2011

A survey* just out shows that Yorkshire has bucked the trend nationally for the average number of conferences and events taking place across the region in 2010.

The award-winning destination hosted an average of 450 events per venue, proving higher than the national average at just 371 events. The figure represents a 5% increase for Yorkshire from the 2009 figures compared to a 2% decrease nationally.

Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "The recent findings are brilliant news for the region and highlight that Yorkshire is the place to do business. With the majority of conference and event organisers struggling with tightened budgets, Yorkshire provides a cost-effective destination for events that doesn't cut back on quality and high standards.

"Our region is home to some of the most diverse and unusual venues in the UK and Europe - from seaside spas, historic houses and academic venues to purpose built conference centres and hotels - we really do have the full package."

Other findings from the survey confirmed that Yorkshire attracted a slightly higher proportion of public sector conferences and events (35% of all business) than the UK (28% nationally) in 2010 while the corporate sector accounted for 46% (51% nationally) and associations 19% (19% nationally).

In 2010 the average day delegate rate in Yorkshire was £34 - down only slightly from £35 in 2009 - while the UK day delegate rate saw a more significant decrease from £46 to £42. The average 24-hour rate for the region was £127, down from £132 in 2009 although above the national average of £120 which drops from £140 in 2009.

Gary Verity added: "Although we are realistic that we are working in difficult times, it is positive to see that our region is holding its own in the business tourism field. The survey reports that our venues have a positive outlook on the future, expecting business levels to increase in 2011. From our own independent research we know that Yorkshire is faring well in terms of enquiries and business on the books for 2011/12 and we hope this trend will continue for the rest of the year and beyond."

Welcome to Yorkshire works with conference bureaux Conference Leeds, York & Scarborough Conferences, Hull & East Yorkshire Conferences and Sheffield Convention Bureau to promote Yorkshire as a destination for conferences and events.

Recent high profile events held in the region include the Round Table National Sporting Weekend, the international 'All our Futures' conference and the Early Years Education Conference.
