Ladies Break Record for Day at Ebor

Story published: 20 August 2010

Ladies Day at York EborThe first ever Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival has broken the Ladies Day record for a four day Festival and is in sight of the four day record of over 80,000 attendees.

A record 29,000 people went racing on Thursday and with one day left hopes are high that last year's record attendance of over 80,000 can be beaten. If it is, it will mean over 180,000 people have come racing in Yorkshire at just two of the county's racing Festivals with the oldest classic race at the St Leger Festival still to come in September.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "To have a new Ladies Day record in our first year of sponsoring the Ebor Festival is great news but to be within touching distance of a new four day attendance record in the teeth of a recession is a fantastic achievement which should not be underestimated.

"We are backing racing in Yorkshire, because we know people love coming racing in Yorkshire. We have the best racecourses and some of the best and most celebrated meetings and we are working hard to widen the appeal of Yorkshire racing across the UK and across the world."

Speaking on behalf of the team at York, William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course, said: "A new Ladies Day record at the new look Festival is testament to the racecourse's partnership with Welcome to Yorkshire. We wanted to widen the appeal of Ebor beyond traditional racegoers and so we are delighted we have a new attendance record in the first year of our agreement and I'm sure we will all be working hard to beat it again next year!"

Yorkshire has been centre stage worldwide this week, with the races and the sponsorship agreement being seen in France, Japan, Dubai, America and Australia as racing fans tune into the global television coverage of the Festival provided by BBC Worldwide.

Yorkshire has also had considerable success on the track this week too with four Yorkshire winners from four different yards in the first three days alone.
