Rescuers honoured for keeping Yorkshire safe

Published: 30 September, 2011

Yorkshire heroes will be rewarded for helping to keep the county safe for visitors in a glittering ceremony, hosted by tourism chiefs.

Welcome to Yorkshire is supporting this year's Search & Rescue Awards Ceremony in a bid to spotlight the vital work carried out by life-saving volunteers based in Yorkshire.

Five teams from across the county will be at the event on Friday October 7 who between them responded to 163 incidents over 15 months: roughly one call every 48 hours.

The team primarily cover North Yorkshire which is England's largest and most rural county stretching 3,000 square miles and bordering seven other counties, although they can be called out further afield.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said: "We are delighted to support this year's Search and Rescue Award's Ceremony to honour and to thank all of our life-saving volunteers.

"They are out in all conditions, providing an invaluable rescue service and we thank them for their tireless efforts in keeping our county safe."

The ceremony will held at Raven Hall Hotel, Ravenscar, Scarborough, which is also supporting the event and providing drinks.

Scarborough showbusiness agent Tony Peers will be hosting the event which will see up to 50 volunteers and guests attend, with 20 awarded for going beyond the call of duty in incidents.

Assistant Chief Constable Sue Cross of North Yorkshire Police and the new President of the North East Search and Rescue Association (NESRA), said: "I am truly inspired by the dedication and commitment of the search and rescue volunteers and they deserve every recognition for their outstanding efforts.

"Our local economy benefits greatly from the many thousands of tourists and lovers of the great outdoors who flock to our region for the spectacular countryside and exhilarating outdoor pursuits in often remote and inaccessible locations. All this takes place safe in the knowledge that, if the worst comes to the worst, there is a dedicated team of people at the end of the phone ready to come to their aid no matter what."

Teams include the Cave Rescue Organisation, based in Clapham the Yorkshire Dales; Cleveland Search and Rescue Team, based at Stokesley; Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team, based in Snainton near Scarborough; Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team, based at Catterick, Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association, Grassington, Yorkshire Dales.
