Yorkshire Welcome to Girl Guides
Story published: 20 August 2010
Yorkshire extended a warm welcome to thousands of girl guides from around the world who experienced the ultimate camping adventure - the Girlguiding UK Centenary Camp.
Girlguiding UK chose Harewood House for its Summer Centenary Celebrations which included a week long Centenary Camp and Fusion - a one day outdoor performing arts festival. Throughout the week guides have been taking part in activities both onsite and throughout Yorkshire.
Hosted on a site the size of 75 football pitches, the Centenary Camp offered a real 'once in a lifetime' experience for girls aged 10-14 from the UK and all across the globe.
With a total of 5000 girls and adults on site, including 800 visitors from Guide and Girl Scout groups from 40 different countries, this was a truly international, 21st Century camp. It's one of several national events being held to mark 100 years of guiding and was supported by Welcome to Yorkshire.
Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said:
"We are delighted to have given Girlguiding UK a warm welcome to Yorkshire. With all of the amazing activities arranged both within and outside the camp I'm sure they had a wonderful time and I hope it inspires everyone to make a return visit to our county in the future."
