Yorkshire's Michelin Chefs turn up the heat at Chelsea
Published: 26 May 2011
Yorkshire's Michelin Star chefs have flown the flag for the county's cuisine after putting in a guest appearance at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
The chefs, Frances Atkins (Yorke Arms, Ramsgill-in-Nidderdale, North Yorkshire), James MacKenzie (The Pipe and Glass, South Dalton, East Yorkshire), Steve Smith (The Devonshire Arms, Bolton Abbey, Skipton, North Yorkshire) and Tessa Bramley (The Old Vicarage, Ridgeway Village, near Sheffield, South Yorkshire) were at Chelsea to promote Yorkshire as a culinary capital of the UK.The chefs took a whistlestop tour of the prestigious show before jumping back onboard Grand Central trains to return to their kitchens.
Graeme Driver, Grand Central's Senior Conductor on board the service, said: "It's not every day you have Yorkshire's finest chefs on board your train. I knew our catering team had a lot to live up to but I'm pleased to say they rose to challenge. The star chefs did not leave disappointed."
James Mackenzie, recipient of Yorkshire's most recent Michelin Star, said: "Grand Central catering staff delivered a first class service and we hope our trip to Chelsea can work in their favour by encouraging more people to visit Yorkshire for its food.
"Yorkshire is home to more Michelin Star chefs than any other region outside London, it can be reached in less than two hours, so there's no reason why more people shouldn't be jumping on a train and sampling some of the finest food on offer in the UK."
Yorkshire dominated the world famous horticultural show this year after Welcome to Yorkshire scooped Silver for the second year running, this time for its The Art of Yorkshire Garden.
Leeds City Council won gold for its garden which included a traditional Yorkshire mill with a working 3m (10ft) water wheel and Doncaster Deaf Trust's urban garden won a silver gilt medal.
