The railway is also the perfect starting point for a day out, whether you're travelling between Pickering and other charming Yorkshire villages, walking on the moors or spending a day by the seaside in Whitby. Pickering Station is also home to a lovely traditional tea room, serving freshly baked scones, pies and pasties throughout the day.
Dating back to 270BC, Pickering is dominated by the magnificent spire of the Church of St Peter and St Paul of Pickering - adding an extra layer of intrigue to this pretty, traditional Yorkshire destination.
Close to the village is the well known theme park Flamingo Land - a great day out for families, attracting around 1.8m visitors per year. Pickering Castle is a classic 12th century motte-and-bailey castle. The grassy mount and the curtain walls punctuated by tall towers are the most prominent features of this royal fortress. The mound was raised by William the Conqueror, and the stonework added for Henry III as a necessary defence against the Scots. The last additions to the defences of the castle were the outer entrance, curtain wall and three towers, built on the orders of Edward II.

Behind Newbridge Park is a 100% voluntary group who have given thousands of hours for free to create a place for locals and visitors to enjoy in a wonderful woodland setting right on the edge of the town of Pickering. So far they have developed bike trails, improved footpaths and created a family picnic area in a disused quarry and adjoining neglected woodland behind Pickering Castle. Locals and visitors can enjoy family walks in a wonderful woodland setting as they reintroduce native species as part of a long term woodland management plan.
The White Swan Inn is exactly what a traditional Inn should be ... simple, luxurious and welcoming. Cedar Barn - ths award-winning farm shop and café is food heaven... but the produce doesn't just taste great; it's also locally sourced as far as possible, with much of it grown on their own farm. Nearly everything they sell or serve has been produced right here in beautiful North Yorkshire, whether it's the fresh meat, Scarborough fish, seasonal fruit and vegetables or delicious deli products.
Post Office Tea Parlour - Step back in time and enjoy a warm Yorkshire welcome. The tables are covered in antique table linens. Old pictures and embroideries adorn the walls. They serve teas and coffee's in vintage china, some dating as early as 1855.
The Fox and Rabbit is a traditional country pub located in the Noth York Moors National Park on the edge of Dalby Forest. The Inn dates from the 18th century and is owned and run by the Wood brothers. You can be sure of a warm welcome, great service and high quality food and drink in comfortable surroundings. Blacksmiths Country Inn is a small, friendly residential country inn situated in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. Beck Isle Museum has just been officially 'Accredited by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). The museum which opened in 1967, is a registered charity and run by volunteers. It houses wonderful collections of the local life and social history of Pickering Vale,including the regionally important Sydney Smith photographic collection. Housed in a fine Grade II* listed building the organisation which has around 140 volunteers continues to shine.
As you step through the entrance of the Ryedale Folk Museum you will be transported back in time. Take a walk through the site and learn about the history of Ryedale from centuries past. Pickering Gallery and Gifts offers an extensive range of artists work and probably has the largest collection in North Yorkshire. Artists represented cover a wide range of subjects including local scenes, landscapes, wildlife, motorbikes and contemporary images to name just a few. The Gallery is also home to the resident proprietor and Photo - Artist David Holland.
Ebony Interiors is a quirky little shop on Smiddy Hill which opened in February 2011 and sells a range of interiors and gifts. Specialising in the shabby chic look with distressed furniture, cards, luxury wrapping paper, costume jewellery, candles, lanterns and hearts.
Feast is stocked with Yorkshire produce where it is the best both from a taste point of view and a sense of economy. This is God's own pantry after all! They genuinely are concerned by quality and food miles. Ginger Pig meat may not compete with the cheap supermarket cuts but pound per kilo it beats almost every Taste the Difference or premium range and they know it is farmed only six miles away! They also keep a regular stock of bacon and sausages but are happy to order anything else in for you with just a day or twos notice.
