Outdoor fun

Away from the hustle and bustle, the rolling countryside is perfect for hiking and cycling. Don’t want to go it alone? Then, leave the hard work to Albion Cycling Company with their guided mountain bike rides.

Take the kids on the Kirklees Light Railway which offers stunning views of the Dearne Valley, Emley Moor TV mast and Blacker Wood. Alternatively run off some steam in the many nature reserves, woodlands or along the Trans Pennine Trail. Take the reins at Hinchliffe Farm’s Heavy Horse Centre, and visit Yummy Yorkshire for delicious homemade ice-cream. Kids will love the outdoor adventure playground at Cliffe House, with onsite café.

Make it, buy it, love it

Make a ceramic keepsake at the Potters Den, and get messy at the North Light Gallery. Holmfirth Arts Festival, Holmfirth Festival of Folk and the Honley Show are just a few of the great family events with workshops and entertainment for all. Denby Dale, Honley and Kirkburton have a lovely selection of independent children’s clothes and toy shops – for that something special.

Shepley Spring Festival

Get camping in May and enjoy this fantastic three day festival with friends and family. Celebrate the very best of traditional music song and dance from Britain and beyond. There are concerts, ceilidhs, Morris dancing, music and dance workshops plus a full programme of activities to keep the kids entertained. Voted ‘Village Festival of the Year’, and based in the rural community of Shepley, this friendly, family festival has a national reputation and strong community links.
