The Dales Episode Guide

The new second series of The Dales returns to ITV1 and once again, Adrian Edmondson returns to the county of his birth, Yorkshire, to bring us the stories behind a summer in the life of the Yorkshire Dales.

Spectacularly beautiful they may be - but the Dales are also a challenging environment for the people who live there in some of its remote communities.

Adrian used to spend many of his childhood summers in the Yorkshire Dales with his family, but in this series he meets a number of characters who live all year round there amidst the stunning scenery of landmarks like Bolton Abbey and Aysgarth Falls.

Episode 1

Adrian Edmondson returns to The Dales and revisits Dales' farmers Clive and Amanda Owen and their five children as they face another eventful summer on their remote farm in Swaledale, and pops in on mother and son farmers Carol and Phil Mellin who have set up a sheepdog training enterprise on their farm near Keighley.

Ade meets community choir the Buckden Singers and joins in on their rehearsals as they prepare for their annual summer concert to the youngest radio DJ in the country. He's interviewed by Drystone Radio's ten year old DJ Daisy Watkiss - perhaps the youngest DJ in the country and meets horse trainer Simon West as he experiences the highs and lows of running a small stable yard in Middleham.

During the course of the series Ade also sees the Dales from above - in a thrilling helicopter ride - and from below as he explores one of its many caves.

Talking of which we also see a caving-mad couple who have their wedding blessed underground and meet an estate agent trying to sell a beautiful Dales waterfall.

Episode 2

Ade and sheep

In this second episode Adrian Edmondson lives a childhood dream by riding on the footplate of a steam train on the Settle to Carlisle railway line with the help of Statesman Rail and West Coast Railway Company. His journey takes him over the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct and through a one mile tunnel deep beneath the Yorkshire Dales.

The Boar's Head at Ripley Castle (buy a 2-4-1 entry voucher to Ripley Castle) is one of only 30 remaining hostelries in the country which appeared in the original Michelin guide, published in 1911. To mark the centenary, Lady Emma and Sir Thomas Ingilby celebrate with a champagne reception as The Boar's Head hosts a 1911 themed dinner for some special guests.

Over in Upper Wharfedale, conductor Anne Vetch leads the Buckden Singers as they prepare for the night of their annual summer concert. After a challenging rehearsal, will Anne be happy with her choir on the night?

Episode 3

In this third episode presented by Adrian Edmondson Dales estate agent Brian Carlisle hosts an Open Day as he tries to sell Catrigg Force waterfall in Ribblesdale. With an asking price of £35,000 will Brian be able to seal a deal?

The programme delves beneath the Dales and visit Ingleborough Cave to witness the marriage of caving enthusiasts Jude Onions and Johnny Latimer. It's hard hats and wellies at the ready as the couple have their wedding blessed underground.

And Ade meets the very talented ten year old, Daisy Watkiss. Daisy is Britain's youngest Radio DJ and is behind the controls at community radio station Drystone Radio. Each week Daisy hosts her own show, Crazy Daisy's Lazy Saturday. This week Ade is Daisy's special guest and she wastes no time in quizzing him for advice about a career in showbusiness. The programme also follows Daisy as guest of honour at the local Cowling Gala where she judges the pet competition.

Episode 4

In this week's episode presented by Adrian Edmondson the series travels to Middleham, otherwise known as the racehorse capital of the North and meets racehorse trainer Simon West who runs Castle Stables, a small yard in the village. This summer Simon has sets his sights on turning around the fortunes of the yard and is pinning his hopes on two new horses.

Meanwhile, Ade travels back to Moor Lodge Farm to catch up with farmers Carol Mellin and her seventeen year old son Philip. Last year, after the death of her husband Albert, Carol took the decision to lose the dairy side of the business. This summer Carol and Phil have embarked on a new venture, training and breeding sheep dogs.

In Swaledale there's a ceremony to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Hudswell Air Disaster where two planes collided in mid-air above the small Dales village. The villagers host an emotional remembrance service to honour the airmen who tragically lost their lives in the disaster and unveil a plaque in their memory.

Episode 5

Ade - Chris & Will Wildman IMG_1516 web

In this week's episode of the series presented by Adrian Edmondson the programme introduces the Wildman family from Kirkby Malham - a family which has a rich farming heritage in the area dating back generations. Father Chris Wildman is a fifth generation butcher and this summer he has plans to build his very own ‘charcuterie' on the farm. Chris' eldest son William is a teenage sheep farmer who tends to a flock of over 200 sheep and today the family travel to a local show where William shows off his prize sheep.

Ade travels to Nidderdale to meet sheep farmer and llama lover Suzanne Benson and hears how Suzanne has started a new business of llama trekking in the Dales. Ade finds out about the practicalities of going for a walk with a woolly friend.

Meanwhile, the programme sees how Nick Mead and his fiance Gina Alexander gave up busy corporate lives to start a new life in the Dales. Home is now a five star hotel boat on the Leeds/Liverpool canal. Will everything be ship shape as they welcome some of their first guests into their new hotel?

Episode 6

Episode 7

In this seventh episode of The Dales, Ade visits the famous Masham Sheep Fair where he meets mother and son farmers Carol and Philip Mellin. They take on a rather different challenge and show off their skills as they put on a display with their ducks and geese. Will the geese co-operate and help them to perform well on the day?

Ade travels to the Kilnsey Show in Upper Wharfedale, another famous show in the Dales. Ade says "The show's very much a part of life for these people, a place where farmers and friends meet up, chew the fat and maybe visit the beer tent - Sounds like a good idea!". Ade catches up with teenage shepherd William Wildman and his grandfather Bill Bland who are competing to win first prize with his sheep.

Meanwhile at the show Ade sees how Carol Mellin and her trusted dog Masie get on when she tries her hand at sheep dog trialling. This is good practise for them both as they prepare to compete in the ‘World Sheep Dog Trials' later this summer.

Ade takes a trip to meet local artist Helen Peyton who gives him a lesson in how to draw a Dales landscape. Helen teaches around 200 would be artists a year and is said to be able to teach anyone to draw a landscape in just 20 minutes. Can she work her magic on Ade and will he produce a masterpiece? The programme also follows Helen to Kilnsey Show where she is charged with judging the local photography exhibition.

Episode 8

In the latest episode of this series presented by Adrian Edmondson, Richmondshire-based clothes designer Izzy Lane searches for traditional Dales knitters to help her complete her clothes collection on time. Armed with posters and flyers she is keen to get the word out; but will the knitters turn up for her audition day? Will she get the skilled help she needs to complete her order in time? Izzy explains, "It's really important for me to employ people who live in the Dales and support this rural economy - everything is done very locally, the sheep are rescued and nurtured locally, the wool is processed locally and so, to have it produced locally is fantastic really."

Ade visits Dales farming family the Wildmans as father Chris embarks on a mission to build his own butchery on the farm in Kirkby Malham. Ade hears how Chris happened upon an old recipe book belonging to his late father and is now trying out some of the secret recipes which had been passed down from generation to generation.

The programme also follows perhaps the most nervous man in Wensleydale as Paul Sidebottom decides to spring a surprise marriage proposal on girlfriend Pippa. Having holidayed in the Dales as a child Paul has brought Pippa back here to continue his romance with the area. The question is - will Pippa say ‘yes'?

Episode 9

In episode nine of the series presented by Ade Edmondson we are reunited with Estate Agent Brian Carlisle as he undertakes a challenging open water charity swim in lake Semerwater and Izzy Lane, ethically conscious knitwear designer, as she begins another new venture, this time she's saving chickens instead of sheep.

With the help of her good friend Ernest, Izzy prepares to take delivery of 40 rescued battery hens which she not only wants to save, but has plans to use their eggs in her new project - an ethical food business. After lots of bossing around, the hen's new home is finally ready to receive its new occupants. The chickens arrive and take to their new surroundings quickly and after two days the chickens run free for the very first time.

We join Brian Carlisle as he's getting ready to take part in the ‘Dip in the Dales' charity swim and his parents and son are there to offer their support. How will he get on in the training and will he be able to complete his mission?

Meanwhile, Ade joins experienced caver Dave Gallivan and the pair set off below ground to explore The Alum Pot system, a large pothole and part of The Dales' wonderful underground world. They both marvel at the beauty of the cavern and Dave points out the jewels in the potholes - ‘Yorkshire diamonds‘, which are actually tiny droplets of condensation forged from the damp, cramped spaces and which shimmer like diamonds in the low light.

Episode 10

In the tenth episode of the series, Adrian Edmondson journeys to the market town of Middleham, known as the racing capital of the Dales to meet up with racehorse trainer Simon West to find out more about life as a trainer and running a stable.

Simon offers Ade insight into the challenges the small yard faces and Ade follows Simon as he prepares to race one of his older horses, 12 year old Springaway.

The programme also focuses on Neil and Jane McNair, who turned their backs on London life to buy and renovate a disused watermill in the village of Bainbridge in Wensleydale. After a 10 month restoration project the couple have transformed the property, Low Mill, into a new home and business. The couple invite all those who helped with the renovations and their neighbours to the opening of the guesthouse, and they arrive eager to see the renovations.

We also catch up with Farmer Carol Mellin as she and her loyal dog Maisie take part in the World Sheep Dog Trials. It's a serious event and Carol is one of 200 handlers from 23 countries taking part in the trials. The weather conditions are tricky to say the least so how will Maisie deal with the intense rain and strong competitors.

Episode 11

In this week's episode Adrian Edmondson meets Dave Tait from the Otley and Yorkshire Dales Dry Stone Walling team and is shown how to repair a dry stone wall in need of a bit of tender loving care. With over 5,000 thousand miles of them in the Dales they have plenty of walls to choose from.

The programme visits the World Heritage site of Fountain's Abbey and Studley Royal where Liz Bielby, the estate's wedding co-ordinator is busy preparing for her own wedding to fiancé Andrew as the couple plan to tie the knot at St Mary's Church in the grounds of the abbey.

Meanwhile in Skipton, green fingered Margaret Wooler opens her stunning five acre garden to the public to raise money for the National Garden Scheme. To try break her previous fund-raising record she is opening her garden to the public on a Sunday

Episode 12

In this final episode of the series presented by Adrian Edmondson the programme returns to Ravenseat Farm in Swaledale where the Owen family are preparing for a very special day - it's youngest son Miles' first day at school. The Owen family also prepare for a rare night away from the farm when they are invited to a photography exhibition in Reeth where they are the stars of the show.

Meanwhile, Dales estate agent Brian Carlisle takes on another role as auctioneer at the monthly family auction in Hawes village hall. Today the Hopper & Co family auction has over a thousand lots and the pressure is on for Brian and his family to ‘sell sell sell'!

And, as summer draws to an end, Dales vicar Anne Chapman holds a harvest festival for her parishioners. She chooses to hold the service in a farmer's field rather than a church, but as Anne forgets to put up directions to the service, will her congregation be able to find the right field?
