Constable Burton Village Green

Turner visited Constable Burton in 1816 when making illustrations for 'A General History of the County of York' by Thomas Dunham Whitaker. He toured the central dales in late August and early September. It was probably about the beginning of September when he visited Constable Burton and sketched the front of Constable Burton Hall. This mansion was built by John Carr of York in 1768 and is still the home of the Wyville family.

Turner's Viewpoint

Turner sketched the main front of Constable Burton Hall from the carriage drive (Landscape with Distant Hills; Details of Buildings, Burton Constable and Knaresborough, 'Yorkshire 1' sketchbook, Tate Gallery, Finberg number: CXLIV 48a) and was probably considering making a finished watercolour of the house, although this was never completed.

The Turner Trails bench is found at the far end of Constable Burton village green next to the playground. Turn off the A684 into the village and the green is on the left hand side.

You can also visit Constable Burton Gardens. The house is not open to the public, but its beautiful gardens are open between March and September.
