Nappa Scar, nr Askrigg
The fells above Nappa Scar were visited by Turner as part of his July 1816 trip to Askrigg, located 1.75 miles away. This area, north east of Askrigg, offers stunning views over Wensleydale.
Turner's Viewpoint
Turner finished his studies at Askrigg by taking sketches from above the town, going up towards Newbiggin and Ellerkin Scar, which is north of Nappa Scar (Askrigg and Wensleydale, with a View of Semer Water, 'Yorkshire 2' sketchbook, Tate Gallery, Finberg number: CXLV 143a and Askrigg Village and Church, with a View of Semer Water, 'Yorkshire 2' sketchbook, Tate Gallery, Finberg number: CXLV 144a).
From here he could see right across Wensleydale towards Semerwater, where he had sketched earlier in the day. Looking at the sketches carefully it is interesting to discover that Turner has taken a synthetic approach to his material. The sketch from the lower viewpoint (Finberg number: CXLV 144a) clearly includes sight of Semerwater itself, but the lake can only be seen from much higher up the fell.

The Turner Trails bench is situated above the hamlet of Nappa Scar at Heugh, up a steep, narrow road in a quarried area overlooking the valley.

Follow the A684 Leyburn-Hawes road to Bainbridge, where the minor road to Askrigg is clearly signposted. Follow main road through Askrigg and for a mile beyond to reach Nappa Scar Farm.
Alternatively, follow the back road from Carperby to Nappa Scar Farm.
At Nappa Scar Farm, turn uphill into Harr Gill and follow to the end.
NB: this is a very steep narrow road, with limited parking at the top
