With origins over 500 years old in part, once a single storey crofters cottage, the Angel Inn at Hetton in North Yorkshire probably received its licence to brew and serve beer to passing cattle drovers in the early 18th century. Over the years it has been rebuilt and extended, but unlike so many 'contrived' country pubs, it has retained many of its original features. All oak beams, separate rooms, nook and crannies, it is a hotch potch of contrasting styles and features, which come together to create an authentic atmosphere reminiscent of a more relaxed and bygone age. Since 1983, it has become, above all, a place to enjoy the finest of food, good real ales and a wine list hand picked of extraordinary length and surprising value. Food is the essence at The Angel with customers travelling from far and wide to enjoy delicious freshly prepared local Dales bred lamb, beef and seasonal game. Fish is a speciality and the specials board invariably offers a choice of at least six extra fish dishes with an annual seafood festival in the autumn. The Angel has been importing wines direct from small producers in mainly France for over 15years so it is hardly surprising that The Angel has won the Northern Hospitality Awards for the best wine list and has twice been in the final for the Wine Pub of the Year. Of extraordinary length and surprising value a selection of over 20 are served by the glass. The Wine Cave across the road is a perfect intimate wedding venue and is fully licenced for ceremonies. The Wine Cave is also used as a private dining venue for Angel Auberge parties which feature one large table for 12-24 guests, red/white gingham cloth and rustic French Farmhouse fayre. Beer drinkers will not be disappointed with a choice of local cask ales including Timothy Taylor's Landlord.Opposite is an exciting barn conversion offering nine charming cottage bedrooms and suites. And all of this is on the doorstep of some of the Yorkshire Dales' most beautiful countryside. The stylish Barn Lodgings are luxuriously equipped and a haven of peace and comfort; each individually furnished under the careful supervision of owner Juliet Watkins. Warm friendly staff can advise on where to go and what to see in the locality and go out if their way to ensure you feel welcome and enjoy your stay.
