Overview

Water Powered Mill 2 images

Gayle Mill is a restored 19th century state-of-the-art sawmill, complete with Victorian machinery driven by water-powered turbines. It is run by the voluntary organisation Gayle Mill Trust and supported by the Friends of Gayle Mill. Gayle Mill Trust has four main areas of responsibility; running the Mill as a historic visitor attraction, providing commercial wood services, electricity generation and heritage education and training.

Gayle Mill is open for visitors by guided tour. Between April and June tours take place at 14.00, and 15.30 Tuesday to Saturday. From July to September tours take place at 11.00, 12.30, 2.00 and 3.30. Each tour lasts approximately one hour.

Tickets available from the Mill on 01969 667320 or the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes, 01969 666210.

On the first Sunday of every month, there are two special Demonstration Tours of the heritage machinery, when visitors not only have a full guided tour but can watch traditional wooden items being made. Each session lasts about 2 hours (starting at 11:00 and 14:30) and tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children (inc. refreshments)

The Mill also welcomes school parties and group visits throughout the year. There is also an activity programme of heritage skills training events taking place all year. Please see our event listing or website for more information.

Gayle Mill is owned by the North of England Civic Trust (NECT) and operated by Gayle Mill Trust (GMT).

After coming third in the national final of the BBC "Restoration" series in 2004, capital funds were raised by NECT to stabilise the building and restore all the water-powered systems and Victorian machinery.

GMT also secured funding to set the Mill up as an operating company with four principal business lines:

• A heritage attraction open to the public

• A wood-product manufactory and timber services provider

• A training and teaching venue

• A net producer of electricity
