We are right in the centre of Helmsley. From the Market Square walk down Bridge Street towards the bridge and on the left you will see an ornate sign hanging above an arched entrance to a paved street leading to Meeting House Court. Come on through the arch and there we are, at the end of a short row of shops. The Arts Centre building has an interesting history. What you see from outside is new but within it sits the kernel of a Quaker Meeting House, built in 1812 - as recorded by the stone plaque set in the original western gable end wall. You can still see it in the upstairs meeting room of our newest extension, opened in 2007.The Arts Centre was registered as a Charity in 1988 and has always relied on a team of about 80 dedicated volunteers to run it, whose efforts are now underpinned by a small part-time team of paid professionals. However, the need for Volunteers remains, so we are always keen to welcome new recruits. And new Friends of Helmsley Arts Centre. (See the Friends page on the website)We have our own resident 1812 Theatre Company, mounting five productions a year, and a very successful 1812 Youth Theatre Company, with three productions a year, 70 members and a waiting list. Some youth members go on to drama school, or drama courses at university, or have progressed to the National Youth Theatre. (More info on the website)We are particularly keen on providing opportunities for young performers, in all the arts, professional and amateur, to show their work and we have initiated a successful Arts Award scheme. We have established an excellent reputation for bringing high quality performers to the Centre, such as Sir Tom Courtenay with his one-man tour de force about Philip Larkin, or the international pianist, Nicolai Demidenko. A full range of music is represented. The Fitwilliam Quartet may be followed by folk maestro, Tom McConville, or a jazz lunch in the garden, or a tribute band. Each September we organise a folk weekend, attracting nationally and internationally successful musicians. We regularly bring prestigious theatre companies like Hull Truck or North Country Theatre to Helmsley, providing moving snd thought-provoking drama or comedy, established work or new plays, traditional or innovative. Three companies have emerged from the Centre amateur drama activities and we continue to support their productions. All this is supplemented with illusrated talks by experts of all sorts , in the arts or otherwise, while we mount exhibitions of art,, including photography, by local and nationally known artists. In addition, our workshops and classes include ballet, drama, life drawing, yoga and Tai Chi. (For more info see our website)The Arts Centre facilities are also avaliable for hire, for performances, for parties, celebrations, conferences or workshops. So do visit us to discover what more about the rich range of events and activities we have on offer. And let us know if you’d like to be on our mailing list for brochures or on our emailing list for regular updates.
