A unique spot in the heart of the Pennine countryside, Standedge Tunnel is the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain, stretching for 3.25 miles through the Pennine countryside from Marsden to Diggle. Standedge runs 30-minute guided tunnel trips aboard a glass topped boat where visitors can learn all they need to know about how the tunnel was built, tales of the ‘navvies’ who worked during its construction and learn amazing facts about the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Also, visitors can take a well-deserved break in our café and enjoy a delicious drink or snack and dine alfresco in one of our outdoor seating or picnic areas. There’s plenty for all the family to see and do including the guided boat trips, special events throughout the season and a brand new children’s playground and wildlife garden for kids to jump, climb and explore. This engineering wonder and one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Waterways’, was worked on by the world-renowned engineer Thomas Telford and celebrated its 200th anniversary earlier this year (2011).Free parking is available in the car park next to Marsden Railway Station and next to the National Trust information point. Standedge is just a pleasant 15 minute walk along the towpath of the canal. The Huddersfield Canal Society run a water taxi service between Marsden Railway Station and Standedge at weekends and bank holidays.Wheelchair access is available to the glass roofed boats, the Visitor Centre and there are disabled toilets located on site. We also have a dedicated car park for blue badge holders directly on site.
