Overview

went 5 images

Wentworth Woodhouse is two 18th c houses joined back to back, just like a very large semi-detached, but it’s actually one house!

Incorporated in the middle of the house is what remains of a house created around 1630 for Sir Thomas Wentworth, later created Earl of Strafford and executed on Tower Hill in 1641.

The two houses can never been seen at the same time as they face east and west. The west front of 1725 is Baroque in style, whilst the east front of 1730 is Palladian and based on the designs of Andrea Palladio. The house with its frontage of 615 feet is the second largest front of any house in Europe, second only to the Catherine Palace at Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin) outside St Petersburg.

It’s strange to think that both these houses were built for one man, Thomas Watson-Wentworth, Lord Malton and later 1st Marquess of Rockingham he inherited the estate in 1723 and died in 1750, he was the nephew of the 2nd Earl of Strafford.

The interiors of Wentworth Woodhouse are of very fine quality and value. They represent the style and designs of just one generation, but they cover a multitude of architectural styles. A suite like that along the east front from the Whistlejacket Room at the south east to the Library at the north east end is not easily matched anywhere in England.

Built on a scale to mirror the house, the Stable Block built by John Carr around 1768 were reputedly build from the winnings of the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham’s stallion Whistlejacket. Originally housing 84 horses, during the 1920’s and 1930’s it cost more to run and maintain the stable block than on the house.

Although there is currently very little and no certainly no original furniture currently at Wentworth Woodhouse, it gives our visitors change to both appreciate the sense of scale of the rooms and building, and admire the architectural features of the rooms, used both for entertaining and private use.

Many people come as visitors and say that they have waited years to see what the house is like inside, although when it was Sheffield Polytechnic tours could be arranged of the interior.
