Housed in the 1755 birthplace of Thomas Lord, one of the founding fathers of modern cricket who gave his name to the London cricket ground, Thirsk Museum stands in Kirkgate, a short walk from the Market Place, just across the road from The World of James Herriot and within a few minutes of the magnificent 15th century Parish Church of St Mary.First opened in 1977 and located in the very heart of Herriot Country, Thirsk Museum is a registered charity staffed entirely by volunteers.Nine period rooms contain a variety of displays and exhibits of local life and industry, cricketing memorabilia and farming bygones, furniture, costume and toys all contributing to a nostalgic re-creation of times past in the town that James Herriot made famous. While the youngsters can tackle our walk-round Challenge Quiz, the grown-ups can handle butter pats and flat-irons in the cottage kitchen, see examples of fine embroidery in the Edwardian Sitting Room, marvel at the bones of our Saxon Giant and shudder at the gruesome legend of the Busby Stoop Chair. There is something here for everyone. We do our best to meet the needs of disabled visitors; there is a ramped entrance to the ground floor, while for those who have difficulty in climbing the stairs, there is a video tour viewable in the Reception Area.
