Nostell Priory was built by the Winn family, on the site of a former Augustinian priory in the eighteenth century. Built by James Paine, with later additions by Robert Adam. The family employed various fashionable tradesmen of the day to create an outstanding house with furniture by Chippendale, furnishings by Robert Adam and decorations, Antonio Zucci and James Rose. With its impressive collection of furniture, books, paintings, beautiful wallpapers and interiors, Nostell is a stunning example of two centuries of country house life in Yorkshire. There are 300 acres of tranquil parkland to explore, with beautiful wildflower meadows, and unexpected vistas to see. The 36 acres of gardens include lakeside walks, rose garden, a recently planted orchard and vegetable garden, several follies and a menagerie garden. There are picnic tables in the park and lots of places to picnic in the gardens. The car park is a five minute walk to the house, but there is an electric buggy available to ferry visitors down if required. The Tea Rooms and shop are currently situated inside the pay barrier, so visitors need to obtain a garden ticket to get in.
