Visit the National Coal Mining Museum for England and explore the 45-acre site to discover the hidden world of mining through the centuries. Visit our galleries to see how miners lived, worked and relaxed, from the Victorian age through to modern day. Don a hard-hat and lamp, to descend 140 metres on an underground tour led by ex-miners to find out how coal was extracted and moved to the surface.
Above ground, visit the ponies and learn about the part they played in coal mining. Explore the Nature Trail and watch wildlife from one of the bird hides. Take a train ride to Hope Pit and unearth the science of mining with the help of interactive displays. Lots of special events, exhibitions and children’s activities throughout the year, plus regular craft fairs.
