Organisers of the Great Knaresborough Bed Race, Knaresborough Lions, have announced that the theme for the 2012 event is to be ‘Olympic Nations’. The Race is to be run on 9 June 2012 and entry forms will be available from January on the Bed Race website www.knaresboroughco.uk/bedrace.Held annually since 1966 Bed Race is part fancy dress pageant, part gruelling time trial, and has become one of the largest community events in the north of England. It is a volunteer vent held to raise money for good causes. The 2011 Bed Race is believed to have raised £100,000 for good causes. Runners race with their beds along the scenic gorge in Knaresborough, up and down the steep streets of this ancient market town, and finish with a swim across the River Nidd. Ninety teams take part, each of six runners, a passenger and a bed. Teams have their beds specially made to withstand the rigors of field and track which includes cobbled streets and wooded parkland.An estimated 25,000 people came to the 2011 event which was bathed in brilliant sunshine. The Knaresborough Lions are opening membership of the organising committee to non-Lions for the 2012 Race, says Chairman Alan Walgate. “Bed Race has grown to such an extent that we are keen to welcome any who want to assist, “ he commented. “Anyone who wants to help can come along and be part of the committee; there is no need for them to become a Lion. “The Olympic Nations theme has been suggested because of the obvious national connections in 2012. We thought that restricting designs and fancy dress just to athletics might undermine the creativity of entrants, so we are going to give each team a nation involved in the Olympics to base their displays on.“This will give them greater scope and we will have a lottery to fit the Olympic nation to each team.”The Knaresborough Lions are part of Lions Club International, a volunteer organisation that exists in 180 countries across the world.
