Food & Drink

Overview & description

This long-established fine food and drink firm celebrated its centenary at the end of the last millennium by opening these charming tearooms in the former living quarters of its founding partner, George Lewis.

Occupying the first and second floors of the 17th century high street store, the tearooms offer a perfect balance of formality and friendliness and are staffed by a knowledgeable and efficient team.

Whether you wish to take a quick break from shopping with a cup of coffee – it is the only place around that blends, roasts and freshly grinds its coffee on-site – or wish to linger longer for a delicious lunch or afternoon tea, you can be assured of the warmest welcome in town.

Try a slice of Lewis & Cooper’s home-made and award-winning acclaimed luxury fruit cake, or sample the intriguingly titled Yorkshire ‘Rabbit’.

There are also extensive breakfast and children’s menus, as well as regularly changing specials. All dietary requirements can be catered for, on request.

Making your way downstairs, you’ll find a huge range of delicious gourmet goodies, sourced from L&C’s Yorkshire doorstep and beyond. This includes cheeses, local and continental meats and pies from a well-stocked deli counter, a massive range of hard-to-find ingredients and fine foods, as well as beers, wines and spirits from an award-winning wine department.

They also sell what they serve, so you’ll be able to buy the things you have enjoyed in the tearooms.

Having a company meeting or special event? They also offer catered private hire of their top floor, gallery tearooms, whose walls are currently adorned with a range of gorgeous Yorkshire scenes captured by acclaimed photographer Joe Cornish.

The company also has a second, smaller store, in Yarm-on-Tees.

Please note: we regret that because of the age and layout of our building we are unable to provide a lift to our upper floors, which are reached by stairs only. Please ask any member of staff if you require any assistance.
