RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden 2013
Le Jardin de Yorkshire
We won a Silver-Gilt Medal for Le Jardin de Yorkshire!
Welcome to Le Jardin de Yorkshire, a garden that celebrates the landscapes of our glorious county, and Yorkshire's successful bid to host the 2014 Grand Départ of the Tour de France. The Tour visits vast swathes of rural France every year, paying homage to its wild and varied rural landscapes. Our garden will replicate those iconic moments by putting Yorkshire's rolling landscapes at the heart of Le Tour.
The garden evokes the rolling hills, meadows, dry-stone walls and agricultural drinking troughs of the Yorkshire Dales, through which the Tour will pass.
Wavy hedges evoke the interlocking hills of a typical Dale, where a meadow is grazed by sheep. A peloton of bikes, represented by series of cycle wheels, flashes through the wild, effusive planting evocative of Yorkshire's rural landscapes, framed by the backdrop of rolling hills. The garden will be evocative of the wild textures of the Yorkshire Dales, with planting including a range of wildflower and grass species as well as the UK's rarest orchid, the Lady's Slipper, which will be a star of our garden.

The Tour will pass through many of Yorkshires fine cities, market towns and villages many of which are commemorated in our Drinking Trough water feature, celebrating the route of Yorkshire's Grand Départ.
2013 sees the 100th running of Le Tour and the centenary of the Chelsea Flower Show. The garden will celebrate these historic milestones.
Our garden designer for our 2013 RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden is Alistair Baldwin. Alistair has a passion for the landscape, borne out of a childhood played out in Rome, Seville, Bilbao, Damascus and Beirut. Now based in rural North Yorkshire, Alistair leads a team of talented designers, running a portfolio of exciting projects across the UK, from the Devon coast to the wilds of Fife. His work is rooted in his appreciation of the spirit of the place and, using dramatic landscape photography, the creation of innovative solutions which are rooted in the historic, spatial, climatic, ecological and cultural layers which define each site he transforms.
