Brontë Country
Brontë Country has much to offer the visitor, located in West Yorkshire on the Pennines a low rising mountain range which runs along the back bone of England. In The historic village of Haworth, with its quaint, cobbled Main Street, provides a selection of intriguing shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs, as well as un-missable attractions such as the Brontë Parsonage Museum. This is the original home of the renowned literary family and preserved as it would have been in their day and containing many of their original possessions.
One of the best ways to admire the rolling hills, moors and dales which inspired the three Brontë sisters is to take a ride on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. This steam railway runs from Keighley to Oxenhope, taking in Oakworth Station, the location used for the 1970s film classic 'The Railway Children'. Take a self-guided walk to Top Withens, thought to be the inspiration of the classic novel Wuthering Heights.
There are also a great selection of attractions in the surrounding area. Visit Oakwell Hall where Charlotte Bronte was so inspired by the house during her visits in the 19th century that she featured it as "Fieldhead" in her classic novel Shirley. The restored gardens are also well worth a visit. Nearby is Red House Museum, a delightful 30's cloth merchant's home with fascinating Brontë connections. Charlotte Brontë visited often and featured Red House in her novel "Shirley". Includes period rooms, enchanting recreated gardens and exhibitions in restored outbuildings.
East Riddlesden Hall is an intimate 17th century manor house with a stunning collection of embroideries, pewter and oak furniture. Visitors can wander around the house or out in the award winning romantic gardens. For something a little different, Hebden Bridge Cruises offers a choice of 30 minute scenic cruises to a more leisurely afternoon tea, Sunday lunch trip or a chartered cruise, you can relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the canal or learn more about the history, heritage and wildlife of this fascinating area.
Vintage transport enthusiasts will also not be disappointed with a visit to the Ingrow Museum of Rail Travel where over 50 TV and film productions have featured restored railway carriages from this multi-award winning museum. Sit in their carriages and imagine what rail travel used to be like.
Nearby in Bradford UNESCO city of film you will find National Media Museum where you can fall in love with film and watch Jane Eyre from 9th September.
