From abseiling cliff faces to sailing our lakes, many attractions in Yorkshire cater for all levels of mobility. The real beauty of Yorkshire is that whatever you want to do, there's nothing stopping you enjoying the best our county has to offer.
Don't forget there are outdoor activities which can be suitable for a much wider range of people than you think, and there are specialist instructors who can help to make things happen. This section should provide some ideas and inspiration. You will need to contact these places to check if they can meet your individual requirements.
As well as the Trans Pennine Trail, our main On Wheels section highlights a number of family ride suggestions using forest trails, disused railways and canal towpaths, for all the family to enjoy.
At Hatfield Water Park in South Yorkshire you can kayak, build a raft, try a high ropes course, abseil and much more, while at Pugneys Watersports Centre near Wakefield offers fun watersports for all. The largest lake is a 100 acre watersports oasis with fantastic sailing and kayaking or try your hand at Canadian canoeing.
Still on the water, Scaling Dam Sailing Club, located between Whitby and Guisborough, has a range of adapted dinghies for anyone wanting to experience the thrill of open water. There are taster sessions for those looking to try something new and plenty of opportunities for the more confident to hone their skills.
Accessible fishingYorkshire's network of natural rivers, post-industrial waterways and rivers offer fantastic fishing and many spots perfect for casting your line.
You can enjoy fishing on the River Ure from one of two accessibility platforms fully adapted for wheelchairs. This is a great trout and grayling fishing site. Here the river winds lazily through meadow land and you will also often see birds such as dippers, grey wagtails, kingfishers and sand martins. With both deep and shallow stretches, the river is ideal for 20lb Pike, 6lb Chub and 3lb Perch, not to mention lazy afternoons relaxing in peace. Day tickets are available from the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes. Accessible parking is available on site. A leaflet and MP3 audio version 'Access for All in Wensleydale' have further information and can be downloaded here.
Download the Environment Agency's Where to go fishing guide to Yorkshire for more ideas which highlights where fishery owners feel their waters are suitable for disabled anglers. Please check with the fishery owner that the fishery is suitable for you. Do note that you must have a National Rod Licence from the Environment Agency to fish anywhere.
Yorkshire's climbing walls are great places to test your handholds and footwork. How about the newest addition to our collection, ROKT Climbing Gym, the UK's highest and biggest, located in Brighouse, close to J25 on the M62. There's something to suit all abilities here, just give them a call.
Harrogate Climbing Centre and The Leeds Wall in Leeds also provide accessible great quality climbing for all abilities. At Harrogate, their instructors have experience of working with groups with a wide range of special needs. Sessions can be tailored to the needs of the group and instructors have a range of techniques to include climbers of all abilities.
Enjoy an introductory experience to caving at one of the Dales' three show caves, Ingleborough, near Clapham, is fairly accessible, although some parts are steep and/or narrow. Scooters are not admitted on safety grounds and manual wheelchair users should ring in advance as a risk assessment may be required. The cave is reached from Clapham by a scenic walk through a nature reserve which takes at least 30 minutes, although it is possible to drive up by prior arrangement.
There's still so much more to do. How about hitting the slopes? Enjoy the speed and freedom of easily accessible skiing at the Snozone in Xscape in Castleford, West Yorkshire.
Fly a bird of prey at Park Rose Bird of Prey Centre at Bridlington on one of their falconry courses. Or take a visit to Ponderosa Rural Therapeutic Farm in West Yorkshire, where you'll find a huge selection of interesting and stimulating activities based around rare breeds, monkeys, a Reptile Room and even zip wire slides. Situated in 20 acres of lovely countryside and fully accessible.
Another popular activity is to go horse riding or carriage driving. This is possible at a number of riding centres, including Kilnsey Trekking & Riding Centre in the Yorkshire Dales.
