Walkers Welcome

If you're planning a walking holiday in Yorkshire, look for the Walkers Welcome logo when booking your accommodation. It's a guarantee that a hotel, B&B, cottage or hostel has extra facilities specifically for walkers, like space for drying outdoor clothes and cleaning boots, local maps and weather news.

Walkers are Welcome Towns and Villages

40_2Hebden Bridge was the country's very first Walkers are Welcome (WaW) town, places which have something special to offer walkers.  You'll know you're in a Walkers are Welcome community when you see the familiar black and gold logo in shops, cafes and B&Bs.

The Hebden Bridge Walkers' Action Group repaired footpaths, created new facilities for walkers and promote transport links into the town.  The town now has three easy-to-follow WaW trails waymarked from the town centre for you to enjoy, to Hardcastle Crags, Heptonstall and Stoodley Pike.

Three more WaW trails start from nearby WaW town Mytholmroyd, to Churn Milk Joan, Scout Rock and Wood Top while Bradfield has developed six short and six longer circular walks through the beautiful countryside on the edge of the Peak District, which can be downloaded here.

Yorkshire is now home to 15 WaW towns, including Ilkley, Marsden and Otley in West Yorkshire, Bradfield (South Yorkshire), Pateley Bridge and Pickering in North Yorkshire, and Market Weighton (East Yorkshire), proof that the county is a real walker's paradise.

Many of them organise a programme of guided walks throughout the year and everyone is welcome to join in.  Find out more about Yorkshire's WaW town's here.

Guided Walks

guided walkLet the professionals guide you around the county

Joining a guided walk is a great way of exploring if you prefer less challenging routes, with a touch of sociability. They're a great way to find out more about the area and are generally free or limited cost.  You'll probably be surprised by the range and amount of guided walks that are available in Yorkshire, and just how accessible they are. They can vary from short potters on well maintained paths through to exposed moorland crossings using open access land.

There are also many walks specifically designed to make use of public transport either simply to get to the start or to enjoy a longer linear walk. There are many good reasons for trying a linear walk, and it gives a whole new experience to trekking in the countryside. For most people the only issue is how to make the return journey. Whilst you can do a car shuttle, this is fiddly and time consuming and it's far easier to use public transport for all or part of the journey. However, many people find the idea of relying on their ability to read a timetable, and accurately timing a walk a daunting and scary prospect. For this reason it makes sense to use one of the excellent guided walks programmes.

Wensleydale Railway run a series of guided walks throughout the year, where you get to enjoy a ride on the heritage railway too! The railway is dog friendly too. A full diary of events is available here.

dalesbus logo smallDalesbus Ramblers organise an extensive programme of weekend guided walks amidst the magnificent scenery of the Yorkshire Dales, all of which are accessible by public transport. The walks are free of charge to bus users and are suitable for people of average fitness. You need to bring a packed lunch, and don't forget your waterproof clothing and spare warm clothes packed in a waterproof bag just in case!

The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line welcome you to its Guided Walks programme from railway stations on the Settle-Carlisle Line and Leeds-Morecambe Line. You can explore and enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park with experienced guides. The guides will meet you at the station where the walk starts from and will be your leader throughout the walk. Strong footwear, warm outdoor clothing, including waterproof clothing is essential. Adequate food and liquid should be carried for a day out as refreshments places are not always available or open at certain times of the year.

There are also many more guided walks in the Yorkshire Dales which can be found here and details of guided walks in Nidderdale can be found here.

The North York Moors run a full guided walk programme, with free guided walks on the first Sunday and Wednesday every month, from March to November, ranging from gentle strolls, some of which are suitable for wheelchairs and buggies, to longer more challenging walks.

The National Trust regularly leads walks on its Marsden Moor Estate.
