Climbing walls

ROKTThe newest addition to Yorkshire's climbing wall collection is ROKT Climbing Gym, the UK's highest and biggest, located in Brighouse, close to J25 on the M62.

There's something to suit all abilities here, with plenty of taster sessions and courses from the beginner to Sport Lead Climbing, as well as holiday camps for the kids - abseil down the outside of this amazing old flour mill with the world looking up at you, slide down inside the huge old flour silo, easy through to really hard climbs, play on the bouldering walls and traverse walls, while learning valuable climbing skills. The friendly chaps down at ROKT also organise events throughtout the year, including socials, film nights, guest speakers, as well as adult and kiddies parties. And they've got even more exciting stuff planned for Phase II, watch this space...

Other great places to test your handholds and footwork include The Leeds Wall with some 200 set routes, varying from grade 3 to 8a. They hold taster sessions and lots of different courses to help you learn to climb whatever your level of experience. They also run a number of outdoor courses and evening climbing throughout the summer at different locations in Yorkshire.

Harrogate Climbing Centre's 14m lead walls, extensive bouldering and top rope lines will give plenty of challenges. If you've not climbed before, come along for a Climbing Taster Session and they'll show you the ropes.  They also run kids and youth clubs, family taster sessions, and of course climbing routes and boulder problems for all abilities! Indoor and outdoor courses are available.  Complete with onsite café, providing a great place to relax between climbs, and an onsite branch of Outside, Britain's best mountain shop, with impartial advice on the wide variety of kit you would expect from a modern climbing retailer.

For a taste of the outdoors all year round, Xscape in Castleford, West Yorkshire, has indoor snowboarding, skiing and skateboarding, as well as The Ledge ClimbZone, with its two rock climbing walls, themed on the classic North American sandstone towers in Castleton and Monument Valley.
