The Experience
The Three Peaks Race, which traverses the famous Yorkshire Dales mountains of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside, has a great reputation as one of the oldest, most famous and best organised fell races in Britain.
First run in 1954, it covers 24 miles of the most rugged and spectacular countryside in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, taking competitors to a height of 2,500 feet above sea level. The course records are held by English internationals Andy Peace at 2 hours 46 minutes 3 seconds and Sarah Rowell at 3:16:17.
For 2010, the annual Three Peaks Race is on 24th April, based at Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
The World Mountain Running Association chose the well established race in the Yorkshire Dales, in the face of stiff competition from other high profile European destinations, as the 5th World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge in 2008.
.
Many overseas competitors are expected, including selected international elite long distance mountain runners for whom the organisers must provide free accommodation and generous subsidised travel.
