Families looking for fun and affordable ways to keep children entertained this summer can look forward to a trio of playful performances arriving across Yorkshire, thanks to Red Ladder Local’s 2025 programme.

From an adventurous new musical to a brilliantly silly take on Shakespeare, and a delightfully messy game show, there’s something for every young explorer’s taste.

Robyn Hood

Kicking off the season is Robyn Hood, an original musical written and directed by Ruth Cooper and Andrea Heaton. Inspired by the legendary folktale, this fresh version tells the story of Robyn, a little girl living in the city who dreams of woodland adventures from her hand-built den on a patch of green land. When developers threaten her sanctuary, Robyn escapes into her imagination, joining a band of outlaws to stand up to the mean sheriff.

Combining playful storytelling, original live music and plenty of friendly audience participation, Robyn Hood promises an engaging experience for children aged 3 to 7, complete with integrated audio description. Catch it at The Cluntergate Centre in Horbury on 22 June and at St John’s Parish Hall, Staincross on 24 July.

Pipes and Poo

Next up is Pipes and Poo, a brand-new interactive game show from award-winning children’s theatre makers One Tenth Human. Expect silly dance moves, real toilets and a healthy dose of laughter as the show dives into the fascinating world of water, pipes, and all things poo. Designed for everyone aged 4 and over, it’s the perfect way to sneak some science into an afternoon of giggles. Pipes and Poo comes to The Cluntergate Centre in Horbury on 13 July.

Rubbish Romeo and Juliet

Finally, the ever-popular Rubbish Shakespeare Company returns with Rubbish Romeo and Juliet. Famous for their madcap, family-friendly twists on Shakespeare’s best-known works, this energetic show promises clowning, slapstick and a lot of chaos, using nothing but a handful of tatty props and plenty of imagination. Recommended for children aged 5 and up, this fun introduction to the Bard is on at Belle Isle Tenant Management Organisation (BITMO) on 21 August.

Bringing Theatre to Local Doorsteps

Red Ladder Local is an initiative by Leeds-based Red Ladder Theatre Company, designed to bring high-quality theatre and workshops into community spaces like church halls, community centres and pubs — making great entertainment more accessible for families who might not usually get to the theatre.

All three shows combine live performance with lots of audience interaction, offering brilliant ways to keep young minds busy and imaginations firing throughout the summer holidays.
