A bold new exhibition by Wakefield-born artist Jason Wilsher-Mills will take over Wakefield Exchange (WX) this summer, marking his first large-scale solo show in the city where he grew up. Jason and the Wakefield Adventure runs from 20 June to 7 September, inviting visitors to step into his colourful, humorous and deeply local world.

Striking Sculptures and Local Stories
The exhibition will feature a series of eye-catching inflatable and fibreglass sculptures, including Jason’s biggest work to date — an incredible 20-metre inflatable sculpture created especially for Wakefield. Alongside these monumental pieces, visitors can explore interactive digital art, AI-powered projections, short films and soundtracks inspired by the city’s history and its people.
Born in Wakefield in 1969, Jason uses his art to celebrate disability, northern working-class heritage, popular culture and the stories that shaped his childhood. He has collaborated with local disabled community groups to create a brand-new artwork displayed in the Canopy outside WX.
A Packed Summer of Creative Activities
Alongside the exhibition, visitors can enjoy a lively programme of events and activities, including inflatable walkabout performances, creative workshops, tours, and special sessions for schools and libraries.
Councillor Hannah Appleyard, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said there is something for everyone to enjoy, encouraging families and local residents to get involved.
