This summer, Bradford Cathedral is inviting everyone to become part of an extraordinary community artwork celebrating the city’s rich heritage, culture and people — one stitch at a time.
Visitors of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to add their own thread to a giant tapestry being woven in the Cathedral’s West End, as part of its Weaving Stories project for the UK City of Culture 2025. Hundreds have already taken part, and there’s plenty of time to get involved before the loom closes on 15 September.

No weaving experience is needed — full instructions are available in several languages, and friendly guides are on hand to help. It’s free to join in, and participants can also leave a written story to be added to the tapestry’s ‘soundscape’ of local voices and memories.
The loom is usually open Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm, and Sundays from 12 noon to 3 pm, although times may vary around services and special events. Check the Cathedral’s website or social media for the latest opening information.
Alongside the weaving, visitors can discover more about Bradford’s wool heritage on guided tours, watch live weaving demonstrations, and join in community gatherings and talks. Highlights include a special ‘Crafting the Cathedral’ weekend on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 July, part of the city-wide Bradford Heritage Festival.
The wool for the tapestry has been locally sourced, spun and dyed by the Bradford Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, and supported by Haworth Scouring.
The Revd Canon Ned Lunn, Canon for Intercultural Mission and the Arts at Bradford Cathedral, said:
“This project is about more than preserving history; it’s about bringing people together. By taking part, you will help safeguard an at-risk heritage craft, learn new skills, and build lasting connections with one of Bradford’s most significant cultural spaces.”
Once complete, the finished tapestry will be unveiled at the Cathedral on St. Blaise Day, 3 February 2026, supported by specially carved stone weights created by the West Riding Stone Carving Association and inscribed with words and phrases shared by the community.
While visiting, you can also explore the Cathedral’s exhibitions, snap a selfie with one of the ‘Wish You Were Here’ boards, and pick up a free postcard featuring the stunning West Window.
Weaving Stories runs until 15 September 2025. Everyone is welcome to add their stitch — and their story.
