In the beginning there was nothing. A cold and empty industrial unit sat bare and unloved, waiting for the instant to happen. As Heisenbergs uncertainty principle states – the more precisely the position of a particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be known. In a similar way, the more precisely the date for the beginning of Atom could be pinned down, the less complex and creative the brewery would be. But in the end, from nothing, came Atom.
After much hard work, crazy welding, a lot of scrubbing and amazing support from friends and family, Atom Brewing arrived on the scene around January 2014 (or did it?). Created by Allan Rice and Sarah Thackray out of their passion for beer and science, Atom has created over 14 different beers in its first year and supplies the best beer bars in the country.
Atom aims to blend scientific principle, brewing knowledge and raw enthusiasm to create beers that are full of big flavours, use world class ingrediants and display their own unique style. Ultimately the process of making beer (whether traditional or off the wall) is the most exciting part of what we do. There is nothing better than experimenting on our brew kit to make a new beer.
A beer from Atom should be of excellent quality, unique flavor and eminently quaffable. But in addition to this, it must also have that certain je ne se quoi – in the words of Albert Einstein;
If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?
Atom follows this theme with its focus on science and education; brewery tours are run weekly for the public, giving an overview of the brewing process and run by our knowledgeable team, we run an 8-week long intensive Beer School for beer lovers wanting to improve their knowledge and craft and we provide educational tours for school groups tailored specifically to subject specifications. In addition to this we are actively involved in scientific research, collaborating with Hull University and the Science without Borders programme to study complex carbohydrate characteristic of beer.
