Description

Cartwright Hall Art Gallery is the site of the newly opened David Hockney Gallery containing Bradford’s unrivalled collection of Hockney’s work from Bradford School of Art. We look after and display Bradford’s public art collection as well as bringing art to the region showing temporary historical and contemporary exhibitions. The collections consist mainly of 19th and 20th century British art, with strong collections of international contemporary prints and contemporary South Asian art and crafts. Cartwright Hall was opened in 1904 and is sited in the magnificent green flag awarded Lister Park.

“I used to love going to Cartwright Hall as a kid, it was the only place in Bradford I could see real paintings.” – David Hockney

At Cartwright Hall, the public collection that inspired Hockney as a child and student, we have opened a dedicated gallery about his life and work. Visitors can see an introduction to the artist and his techniques, early works showing how it all began in Bradford and watch previously unseen footage of the artist in his Bridlington studio.
